Rhetorical Reflection
Genre- The author chose to do a Powerpoint presentation for genre 1, it is about what the death penalty is, how it affects society and the economy by stating the pros and cons, and also if it should be legal or illegal. For genre 2 the author chose to do a short story to connect it to “carnivalesque.” The short story was about An African American couple who simply needed to spend their anniversary at Coachella, a celebration where individuals celebrate and have fun. Rather than having a beautiful get-away, they were unfairly convicted for killing a woman. They experienced the entire cycle of the death penalty and at the last moment it went sideways, the crime was committed by John Doe, who met the victim at the event.
Tone- For the Powerpoint presentation genre, it is believed that the tone was informative and alarming so people can see how important this topic is and actually take it seriously. For the short story, the author tried to use pathos so the audience can feel the emotions and feel what the characters are experiencing.
Audience- The audience for the Powerpoint Presentation is young teens, activists, and political leaders because they have more influential assets on the topic of the death penalty. Young teens and activists can influence society to abolish the death penalty by using social media platforms and their voices to speak up on the topic. Political leaders can use their power and authority to demolish the death penalty because it actually affects the economy a lot in a negative way. For the short story, the audience is the people of California because they have the opportunity to abolish the death penalty, but they chose to ignore it. The state is one top in the US for using the death penalty as a form of punishment.
Purpose- The purpose of both genres is for people to see how harmful the death penalty is to both society and the economy. And it should be illegal and abolish, also the money spent to perform a single execution should be spent on reforming the criminals and making the place a better one.
Stance- For both genres, my stance is to abolish the death penalty because we should be better human beings than those who committed the crimes. I believe that the prison system should be a place where we reform people to be better, not make them suffer. Instead of spending millions on one person’s execution, the money should go to better use like maybe a better prison system, therapy, and so on.
